A new rule proposed by San Francisco Superior Court would remind potential jurors not to blog, Tweet or conduct Internet research about cases. The need for the rule became clear to the court when an entire panel of 600 jurors had to be excused.

California Adds "Initial" Meet & Confer and Clawback Provisions

Just a quick note to inform you that the California Rules of Court (C.R.C.) 3.724 Duty to Meet and Confer have been amended as of August 14th, 2009 to include provisions for initial meet & confer and clawback agreements.  This addresses what many of us in California identified as a gaping hole in the California Electronic Discovery Act (CEDA).

ANNUAL MEETING WEBCASTS --- Attorneys unable to attend the Annual Meeting in San Diego, Sept. 10-12, have an opportunity to watch 11 live webcasts offering 14.5 MCLE credits.

 

TWO TOP JOBS --- The State Bar is seeking applicants for the positions of Chief Trial Counsel, responsible for the bar's disciplinary enforcement division, and General Counsel, legal adviser to the bar.

 

HEARING ON RULES REVISIONS --- Comments on several proposed revisions to rules related to the practice of law will be heard September 12 in San Diego. 

 

COURT CLOSURES --- In response to budget issues, all California state courts will close on the third Wednesday of each month, from September 2009 through June 2010.

 

CHANGING CAREERS? --- The State Bar Lawyer Assistance Program will offer a six-week workshop in Los Angeles (Sept. 16 – Oct. 21) to help lawyers learn strategies for taking their career to the next level.

 

FEE ARB TRAININGS SET --- The State Bar Committee on Mandatory Fee Arbitration has scheduled fee arbitration trainings Sept. 17 in Marin County and Oct. 2 in San Bernardino County.

 

LIMITED PRO BONO --- Supporters of new Rule of Professional Conduct 1-650 hope it will result in an increase in the availability of short-term limited legal services for the public.

 

ATTORNEY e-MAIL ADDRESSES --- All California attorneys must provide an e-mail address to the State Bar beginning Feb. 1, 2010, under a new rule of court approved by the Supreme Court.
